Adventures in Bern

A few days ago, we ventured into Switzerland's capital city Bern. It was crazy becasue it was only 1 1/2 hours away, but it felt like a completely different country.  About halfway through the drive the road signs changed from being written in French to being written in German.  When we drove into Bern my dad said it looked just like Germany. He felt more comfortable since he speaks German...whereas my mom and I were completely lost! It was a lot of fun touring the city, and the people were very friendly!

That's right - no matter where we are in the world, my mom can find Starbucks! She claims it's a gift...

We walked all the way to the top of the tower...it was A LOT of stairs!  Dad was a little tired...

Mom and I were fine!  (or we just had lots of time to rest before the picture...)

Bern's name is actually derived from the German word for bear.  Here's a brief history below...

IMG_2404

Because of this, the symbol for this canton is a bear; and there's even an exhibit of bears in the middle of the city.  You can even pay for food to toss down to the bears!

 IMG_5634 IMG_5628

After visiting the bears we decided to walk around the town and the shops...

Raw meat never looked so...organized?

This was a fun store!  It's full of fresh oils and vinegors of all sorts of flavors!  And the best part...free samples :)

After a long day of walking, Dad treated us to dinner at Kornhauskeller.  It was delicious!  And the interior of the restaurant was fantastic!

Exploring Geneva

Yesterday we decided to spend the day exploring Geneva.  We took the train in from Nyon and met our friend Sylvie.  We had a great time walking through Old Town, and I even got to practice my French at the post office buying postcard stamps - daring, I know :)  Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure!

Welcome to Switzerland!

Bienvenue!  Time to post some pictures from my adventures in Switzerland!  Hopefully there will be more coming :)

I left the Tyler airport Saturday at 6:50 am and began my 18 hour journey to Geneva. On my flight to Geneva, I sat next to a fun French girl who was about my age. She practiced speaking English with me, and I practiced speaking French with her! It was a great way to pass the time. I safely arrived in Geneva at 7:45 am after getting only a little bit of sleep on the plane.

I went to church with my parents that evening and met some of their new friends. Afterwards we went out to dinner at Restaurant de la Croix Verte.  It was delicious!  The waiters were also very fun and friendly.  They even helped my mom and I remember the names of the silverware in French.  Our very own private French lesson :)  By the end of dinner, however, I was ready to crash - I had been awake for almost 33 hours!

Unfortunately, while I arrived safely in Geneva, my luggage was not so lucky.  Thus, on Monday I got to wear my mom's clothes while we walked around Nyon!  haha :)

IMG_5486

I was very excited to learn that they had found my bag in Newark and they sent it over on another flight.  My luggage and I were reunited Monday evening.  It was a very joyous occasion :)

IMG_5493

The Easter Bunny came early in Switzerland for me.  I was greeted with a bunny&duck in an Easter egg Swiss chocolate sculpture.  It tasted even better than it looked!

IMG_5499 IMG_5503

Well, I will leave you with some views from my parent's new home.

This is the view from the dining room. (Yes, it is a cemetary...but hey, the neighbors are quiet!)

Update on my summer and fall...just living up to the "sporatic" in my blog name!

So I'm finally getting around to updating you on what I did this summer and fall!  As always, I have included pictures for your viewing pleasure :)

This summer I had the chance to put the leadership skills that I learned in the Forge into practice by discipling a group of girls in a program called Baby Ruths.  Six girls who'd just graduated from high school and I served, learned, and grew alongside each other during this 5 week program.  It was very challenging, but it brought about some huge growth opportunities and some great memories!

We did a lot of cleaning, cooking, scrubbing, setting tables, and dishes galore!

IMG_4503

We even got to experience scrubbing the inside of a dumpster!

IMG_4566

At the end of the program we treated the girls to a fancy tea party.  It was probably the cleanest we had been all summer! :)

IMG_4596

After working at camp the first half of the summer, I was blessed to have some down time in Utah with my family!

Andrew got two new kittens (which of course I loved!!) Their names? Sergeant Bobcat & Miss O'Reilly.  Sounds like Andrew huh? :)

IMG_4698 IMG_4704

We tried mountain biking again this summer. This attempt was much more successful than last year!

IMG_4720 IMG_4725

Gotta love the jumping pics!

IMG_4712 IMG_4715

In August I began my first full-time job at Pine Cove as an outdoor education instructor.  As part of our staff retreat we got to swim with beluga whales!

IMG_4773

Here are just a few of the animals I get to interact with in our "Critter Room."

This is Waldo, and he is a caiman (looks like a small crocodile). He is one of my least favorite animals to hold because he fights everytime you pick him up!!  Oh the ways I am forced out of my comfort zone...

IMG_5012

This program is teaching me how to be a snake charmer!  :)

IMG_5033

Well, that's all for now!

Journey to the Holy Land

We're back from Israel!  It was definitely an experience that I will never forget!  We traveled all over Israel, and we hiked about 10 miles each day. Definitely a workout, and definitely worth it. I wanted to share some pictures with you from the trip ~ Enjoy!  (you're welcome Mom! haha!)

This is the wilderness where the Israelites wandered for 40 years.  Lucky for us we came during the cooler time of the year :)

IMG_3719

These are our amazing tour guides!  Marty was our American guide and Boaz was our Israeli guide.  They did a fantastic job leading us and teaching us!

IMG_4039 IMG_4040

When we were in Jerusalem there were soldiers everywhere.  In Israel, every citizen is required to spend at least 2-3 years serving in the army.

IMG_4026

Floating in the Dead Sea (also called the Salt Sea).  For those of you from swim team - look I can FINALLY float!! :) It was a lot of fun, but not so fun when you got it in your mouth...

IMG_3752

Hiking through Ein Gedi.  This is where David hid from Saul.

IMG_3815 IMG_3820

Getting "all in" in a spring of living water found in the middle of the desert.  Contrasted to the Dead Sea, it is clear why Jesus calls Himself the Living Water.

IMG_3831

View from the top of Mt. Arbel.  This is the region of Galilee.  To the right you can see the Sea of Galilee.

IMG_3836 IMG_3872

Eating fish from the Sea of Galilee.  Yes, I actually tried a bite...still not a fan of seafood (as you can tell from the final picture!)

IMG_3856 IMG_3857 IMG_3858 IMG_3859

An olive tree vinyard at the base of Mt. Carmel (where Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal).  Here we talked about how we are grafted into the Jewish faith through Christ.

IMG_3876

This is Cesarea where Paul began or ended each of his missionary journeys.  He was also held in prison here before being sent to trial in Rome.

This is the theater (that is still used today).

IMG_3883 IMG_3884

King Herod had a mighty palace and temple built in Cesarea out of white marble that was eventually destroyed.   Still today pieces of white marble are washed onto the shore.  We each collected some pieces as a reminder of how earthly things will pass away and how we need invest in things that will last.IMG_3887 IMG_3886

This is the field where David fought Goliath.  We were able to go down to the brook where David most likely would've gathered his stones. Our tour guide Boaz joked that we shouldn't try to find the actual stone that David used to kill Goliath because he had already found it!

IMG_3907

One morning we were able to travel to Bethlehem, and we visited the Church of the Nativity.  This star marks where they suspect Jesus was born.

IMG_3946

The view from the Mount of Olives.  This is the city of Jerusalem, and you can see the Dome of the Rock on the temple mount.

IMG_3972

The Dome of the Rock on the temple mount.

The Jewish people believe that the original temple would have been located here on the temple mount.  To this day, no Orthodox Jew will walk on the temple mount for fear that they might accidently step in the place where the Holy of Holies was (which would be irreverant).

IMG_4014

The Western Wall.  At all times of the day you can see people praying at the wall.  This is the most holy site for the Jewish people because it is the closest place to the Holy of Holies.

IMG_4021

On our final night, Boaz invited us to his home for dinner!  His wife made us an amazing meal!  It was an excellent way to end our trip to Israel!

IMG_4045

I will getting some more pictures from my fellow Forge students from places I didn't capture on my camera.  Stay posted and thanks for viewing! :)
